AEPW Alliance Visits Vary Tech to Explore Global Plastic Recycling

Published on:2025-07-23

Recently, Doug Chamberlin, Chief Advisor of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW), alongside Bryan Sun (newly appointed Chief Advisor for China), Senior Project Advisor Li Junji, and Coordinator Liu Menghan, visited Vary Tech for in-depth discussions on plastic pollution control and circular economy development. Ming Guoying, Chairman of Vary Tech, and Song Zhen, Deputy General Manager, hosted the delegation.

As a leading global nonprofit organization in the plastic value chain, AEPW has grown into an international alliance of 65 member companies—including industry giants such as BASF, Dow, ExxonMobil, Shell, and Procter & Gamble—since its establishment in 2019. Spanning the entire plastic lifecycle (production, use, sales, processing, and recycling), AEPW has driven 70 projects worldwide.

With 20 years of expertise in solid waste resource utilization, Vary Tech serves over 1,000 waste treatment enterprises globally. Through its dual-track strategy of "Physical and Chemical Recycling of Waste Plastics," the company has successfully built a closed-loop system for the end-to-end management of waste plastics.

Innovations in Physical Recycling

Vary Tech has pioneered a demonstrative path for physical recycling:
2009: Launched e-waste dismantling operations.
2015: Established an integrated "Dual-Network" recycling system.
2018: Became Hunan Province’s only high-quality plastic recycling platform.
2022: Achieved large-scale production of Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastics.
2024: Partnered with Kumho Sunny to close the loop on PCR plastic recycling for household appliances. By integrating digital traceability systems and AI technology, Vary Tech ensures full lifecycle transparency, enhances the value of recycled plastics, eliminates industry "greenwashing," and promotes authentic, traceable, and sustainable plastic recycling.

Breakthroughs in Chemical Recycling

Vary Tech’s self-developed oxygen-free pyrolysis technology achieved China’s first industrial-scale chemical recycling project for municipal waste plastics in 2019. This project has operated stably for 5 years, processing ~1.1 million tons of municipal waste and chemically recycling 110,000 tons of waste plastics. In 2023, the technology gained international recognition, with equipment exported to South Korea. In 2025, it was honored with the "Excellence in High-Value Recycling Technology Award."

Global Recognition

Doug Chamberlin praised Vary Tech’s efforts:
"Vary Tech’s professional expertise, corporate mission, and pragmatic innovation in plastic circular economy are impressive. Its end-to-end approach—from technology to implementation—demonstrates a commitment to leading industry transformation."

The Global Plastic Challenge

According to the UN Environment Programme, 100 billion tons of plastic were produced worldwide from the 1950s to 2022, with 5 billion tons discarded directly into nature. Studies by the Ocean Conservancy show that nearly 80% of marine plastic originates from land-based litter, with over 90% of river plastic pollution flowing from 10 major rivers (8 in Asia, 2 in Africa).

Collaborative Solutions

As a core member of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation’s Chemical Recycling Working Group, Vary Tech collaborates with global giants like BASF, Dow, Shell, and ExxonMobil to build a "Closed-Loop Chemical Recycling Ecosystem" and advance waste plastic recycling worldwide.

Vary Tech’s chemical recycling technology converts waste plastics into high-value pyrolysis oil. Through its dual-track strategy, it achieves "Plastic-to-Plastic Circularity":
Refining oil into high-quality gasoline, diesel, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to replace fossil fuels.
Catalytic cracking to produce ethylene, propylene, and other chemical monomers, enabling molecular-level regeneration of waste plastics into new materials.

Conclusion

AEPW’s visit marks a significant step in global collaboration to tackle plastic pollution. It not only pioneers new models for plastic circular economy development but also signals a future of innovation and cross-sector partnerships to build a plastic-waste-free world.
