CBC Conference Focuses on Biochar Technology, Vary Tech Solution May Help Steel Companies Navigate "Carbon Tariff" Dilemma

Hangzhou, June 2025 – The 8th China (International) Biomass Energy Conference & Exhibition (CBC 2025) was recently held in Hangzhou. Vary Tech was invited to participate, with Hu Rongming, Market Director of the Investment & Development Department, delivering a keynote speech titled "Market Opportunities and Innovation for Bio-Black Pellets," providing a clear and technologically advanced roadmap for the industry's challenges.

Co-organized by New Energy Net, Global Biomass Energy Network, 51 Pellet Trading Network, and leading industry enterprises, the conference brought together experts, scholars, and corporate representatives for in-depth discussions on topics like biomass pelletizing, gasification, and coal co-firing. During the highly anticipated "Industry Leaders Roundtable," experts engaged in vigorous debates on key issues such as reducing biofuel costs and the latest developments of biochar in the steel industry, opening up new avenues for industrial development.

Driven by the dual forces of the global carbon neutrality wave and energy structure transformation, the biomass energy industry is experiencing unprecedented development opportunities. As the only renewable energy source that can be converted into gaseous, liquid, and solid forms, biomass energy, with its abundant resources and low-carbon circularity, has become a crucial lever for China to achieve its "dual carbon" goals.

Propelled by strong policy tailwinds, China's biomass energy industry is accelerating into a rapid development phase. Recent intensive national policies range from mandating coal-fired power units to possess over 10% biomass co-firing capability, to enshrining biomass clean heating for the first time in the "Energy Law," establishing an institutional foundation. These measures not only accelerate the resource utilization of agricultural and forestry waste but also catalyze a massive market projected to exceed 800 billion yuan by 2025.

Traditional biomass "white pellets" face developmental bottlenecks due to high costs, low energy density, and poor storage/transport characteristics. A technological revolution centered on "Bio-Black Pellets" has emerged. Utilizing advanced oxygen-free pyrolysis carbonization technology, Bio-Black Pellets achieve a qualitative leap in performance: their energy density is significantly increased, with bulk density reaching 0.7-1.0 g/cm³, enabling more stable and efficient combustion. Simultaneously, they possess excellent hydrophobicity, storage/transport properties similar to coal, and good grindability, allowing for high-proportion blending with pulverized coal, thus laying a solid foundation for large-scale industrial application.

This technological innovation is unlocking a trillion-dollar diversified market:
In metallurgy: Biochar serves as a powerful tool to counter the EU's "Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism" (CBAM), potentially saving steel exporters billions in costs.
In energy: It acts as "green coal" to fill an annual market gap exceeding 100 million tons.
Furthermore, it finds high-value applications in multiple sectors: agriculture (as a soil amendment and seedling substrate, increasing seedling survival rate by 40% and reducing fertilizer use by 30%), environmental protection (producing high-quality activated carbon), and new energy (serving as anode material for sodium-ion batteries), emerging as a key force driving a "zero-carbon" future.

At the core of this technological revolution is Vary Tech's "Combined Drying and Distillation Continuous Rotary Furnace Carbonization Equipment," developed based on its proprietary "Multi-product Oxygen-free Pyrolysis Carbonization" technology. This process not only produces high-quality biochar but also co-generates by-products like wood vinegar and wood tar, achieving full material utilization and enhancing overall economic benefits. Compared to traditional charcoal kilns, this equipment represents a disruptive breakthrough: its fully automated, fully enclosed production process slashes the production cycle from over 20 days to just 3 days. By recovering pyrolysis gas for internal energy use, it achieves 30% energy savings and 20% raw material savings, fundamentally resolving environmental pollution issues. Currently, this technology has been successfully industrialized, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons for agricultural and forestry biomass charcoal.

The era of biomass as a low-grade fuel is over. Under the ongoing global energy transition and China's "dual carbon" strategy, Bio-Black Pellet technology, exemplified by Vary Tech, is becoming a critical link connecting green energy and the circular economy, leveraging its unique advantages and vast application prospects. Vary Tech is committed to collaborating with partners across the industrial chain to jointly promote the high-value and large-scale development of biomass energy, injecting powerful momentum into creating a green and low-carbon future.
